Meet Our Runners: Mandi Hart

Meet Our Runners: Mandi Hart

Mandi Hart is a loving wife and a mother of two teenagers. She wears many hats: author, speaker, mentor, and you might find her experimenting with new dishes in the kitchen, or traveling the world running parenting and "fearless" workshops. This year, she's running and 'raising for the Rachel Swart Fund! With only a few days left to go, she's already at over ZAR 6,100! Help her reach her ZAR 10,000 goal by checking our her GivenGain page and contributing. And if you're at the Two Oceans event this weekend, you'll likely pick her out of the crowd in her signature red tutu! *** We know your name, but tell us a little bit about yourself! We'd love to know anything and everything that says a little something about who you are and what you love.  I wrote a book called Parenting With Courage and have run parenting and fearless workshops in countries ranging from SA to Jordan to Scotland to Mozambique.  I have...

Meet Our Runners: John Nielsen

Meet Our Runners: John Nielsen

John Nielsen is 30 years-old but a self-proclaimed “kid-at-heart”. We sat down - at our respective computers - and he answered a few questions about his running habits, his personal life, and his main inspiration for representing the Rachel Swart Fund this year. John has already raised over 11,400 ZAR, which is ALMOST the cost of a motorised wheelchair. To contribute to his campaign, check out his fundraising page on GivenGain. *** We know your name. But tell us a little bit about yourself! How old are you? Where do you hail from? What do you do for a living? Do you have a favourite colour? Anything and everything that says a little something about who you are. I am a 30-year-old but a kid at heart. I was born and bred in Johannesburg, going to KEPS and KES then studying finance and law at Wits. I am married to the most incredible wife and we have 2 cats and 2 dogs. I...

Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon

Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon

In 2017, The Rachel Swart Fund is, once again, a registered charity for the "world's most beautiful marathon"! The 48th consecutive Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon (56 km) takes place on 15 April 2017 starting on Main Road in Claremont. Runners wind their way along Cape Town's stunning coastline, around Chapman's Peak and through Hout Bay and Constantia Nek, finishing at University of Cape Town's sports fields. This year, the Rachel Swart Fund has 44 runners participating on our behalf. We do ask that our runners raise a minimum of R2 000 (R500.00 per entry with additional fundraising commitment of minimum R1 500.00), which can be donated directly to the Rachel Swart Fund by EFT or via our GivenGain platform. For more information about the Old Mutual Two Oceans marathon - rules, requirements, etc. - check out their website or feel free to contact us for details! Jeremy Hazell: A Profile

On 19 April 2014, Jeremy Hazell, 63, became the first person to complete the 56km Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon (OMTOM) in his regular day wheelchair, fitted only with a third accessory wheel for improved steering and manoevreability. Jeremy completed the event in a time of 6h40m, finishing with 20 minutes to spare. An active outdoorsman and lover of the mountains, Jeremy became paralysed in a fall on Table Mountain in 1998. He has been a wheelchair user ever since. After 13 years of inactivity and declining health he was inspired by a Tim Noakes article on the now-famous LCHF (low-carbohydrate high-fat) / Banting diet to revitalise his health and start exercising seriously, losing 30 kg in the process. Fittingly the 56km Ultra Marathon route crisscrosses the Table Mountain chain where Jeremy challenged his nemesis. He says, "I am inspired by the many disabled people who live out the motto that they prefer to be known for what they can do rather than...
